La Place
Saint-Sulpice
Metro : St-Sulpice or
Mabillon. Open every day from 7:30am to 7:30pm.
Situated
in the south of Saint-Germain des Près the current, imposing
form of the Eglise de Saint-Sulpice dates back to the 18th century, opening out onto an elegant
place, the centerpiece of which is an ornate fountain. Being of classical architectural design,
the church contains both classic Doric columns and the Corinthian
pilasters loved by the Greeks. Only one of the church’s towers has been
completed, the uneven profile now a major characteristic. Lovers of Saint-Sulpice will recognise the
three works by Delacroix that adorn the church’s inner walls, amongst
which is found his depiction of Saint-Michel slaying the dragon. For a
unique, almost mythic experience, visitors are advised to come during
the winter solstice, when a small hole in the south transept window
allows through a laser-like beam of sunlight, lighting up the obelisk
at the north end of the church. The experience only lasts a few seconds
but has been faithfully repeated over many years. One of the most famous organs of
Cavaillé-Coll is found in this church. Don’t forget also to
investigate the rue Bonaparte, just next to the church and an excellent
shopping spot.
