George
Méliès bring to cinematography dream, fiction and
magic. Happy coincidence that the mysterious architecture of the French
Cinematheque hosts the filmmaker of a thousand talents, a true virtuoso
technical end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The
exhibition pays tribute to the brilliant inventor of arson,
superimpositions, melted chained ...the best heritage of the
7th fantastic art. In a purple curtain arranged theatre, coupled with an atmosphere almost
phantasmagoric, what remains of the artistic heritage of
Méliès decorates windows: diabolical masks in
cardboard-paste films pantomimes, through strange mechanical creations
magicians. The Cinematheque is strong in arranging a collection
established since 1936, when the CNC (National Centre for
Cinematography) and Malthête Méliès,
granddaughter of filmmaker, just contribute. Around complex creations -
like the kinétographe - Méliès actor
improvised a large part of these works, some famous authors caricature
of French literature, to try out the photograph on glass. Like the
photos of the studio devastated Montreuil, a pan of the work of
filmmaker was unfortunately destroyed. However,
Méliès leaves few jewels of invention and humour.
In The Mélomane (1903), the film manages to multiply his
face to form a musical score. The world of cinema
Méliès applies to the cosmogony theatre Jean
Eugene Robert-Houdin. A conquest of the Pole (1911), one of the last
films of the filmmaker, explores the myth of the monster ice, is unreal
a huge head that rises and eats explorers. Méliès
follows in the footsteps of Jules Verne's most famous film, Le Voyage
dans la Lune (1901). Méliès y included scientists
starred in hats, and already tells the conquest of space and technology
for future lunar rocket
