Musée de l'Orangerie
Orangerie 1934 : Les peintres de la réalité
Musée de l'Orangerie : 01.44.77.80.07. Until 5 march 2007
The re-opening of the Museum of the
Orangery follows a long restoration which returned to space all its
qualities of space and light of formerly. The first exhibition of this
autumn is a true homage to the history of the place since it takes
again the identical set of themes of the exhibition organized in 1934
by Paul Jamot and Charles Sterling and which was entitled : Painters of
reality in France at the XVIIth century. Inside, a virtual
reconstitution completely restores the exhibition of then, which
counted 80 signed paintings George of the Tower, the brothers Le Nain,
Philippe de Champaigne, etc. Half of the paintings hung into 1934 were
again gathered for the occasion. The event was famous because it
revealed with the public the existence of George de la Tour, completely
ignored at the time. The present exhibition respects the spirit of the
painters of reality by accompanying these treasures by passed by about
fifteen paintings active French painters in 1934. We learn there that
Balthus took as a starting point the the Cheater of the Tower, that
Juan Gris adored Le Nain, and that Maurice Denis, Jean Hélion,
Rene Magritte, Pablo Picasso appreciated particularly this French
classicism.
