Eglise
Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois
2, Place du
Louvre, 75001. Metro : Louvre.
Located
at the center of Paris, at the edge of the Seine, this old parish of
kings de France is generally regarded as the Church of the
Louvre. Founded in VIIème century, it was altered many
times during several centuries, revealing several mixtures of style,
Roman, Gothique, Renaissance. A terrible page of the French
history is attached to this Church since, in the night of August 24,
1572, its bell called "Marie", sounded the beginning of the massacres
of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Thousands of Protestants
were assassinated by the catholics, episode culminating of the wars of
religion which darked France lasting several centuries. Splendid
stained glasses still remain in spite of plunderings of the French
revolution. Among the treasures preserved inside, let's discover
a statue of St-Germain of wooden of XVème century, a
Saint-Vincent of stone carved at the same time, a Flemish retable out
of wooden carved, the famous churchwarden's pew where sitted the
prestigious people, manufactured in 1683 by François Mercier on
drawings of Le Brun.
