Charming Musée Jacquemart-André offers the immense
Jacques-Louis David for a glance set of themes quite different from the
great national retrospectives. The small private mansion shelters
more than one about sixty tables, paintings, drawings, recalling the
immense work of this painter, true political witness of its time. This
painter of history would have surely been a journalist today. Committed
journalist since it supported the revolution, the Terror then the
emperor until his last breath. Its absolute monument remains this
titanic painting of the Napoleon Sacre, Hollywood film in advance of
centuries. This exhibition presents some masterpieces such as the
death of Marat, militant painting. In order to build correctly
this exhibition, the conservateur borrowed overall in the private
collections, of which that of Firmin-Didot, editor of books illustrated
by David at the time. Some very political drawings such as the
Death of Peletier, betray engagements of the artist. These
drawings and these feathers show more still than oil, the talent of
draughtsman of David. Many portraits enamel the show, great
specialty of the artist: Suzanne Peletier, Mrs Danton, the Count
Estève... A light and pleasant exhibition which conducts
us in the meanders of a true technical work of painter.
